BLACKBIRDS: Music

Still the One

(BLACKBIRDS)

STILL THE ONE

He sees her in the intersection and slows the car.
Taps the horn, a sideways glance, he knows it her.
Memories of summer winds and cotton dresses, a stolen kiss.
Words that never have been spoken, he’s lived with this.

CHORUS:
He thinks: You are still the one
I always knew you were.
But you belonged to him
And I belonged to her.

They meet for dinner, share some stories, separate lives.
The kids are fine, they’re 12 and 9, you’d like my wife.
Butterflies and nervous expectations, a scent of things that might have been.
Neither one will risk the questions that float like smoke above them.

CHORUS

The fool he was is the fool he is, will always be.
She knew then, she saw the things he’d never see.
As she goes they say we’ll meet again but neither wants to say when.
That night he lies awake and dreams that she is there beside him.

CHORUS
